80 Years ago today on the 30th of November 1936, The Crystal Palace was destroyed in a great Fire. Despite the efforts of over 400 firemen and 89 fire Engines it could not be saved. 100,000 people came to Sydenham Hill to watch the blaze that could be seen from eight neighbouring counties. | The Time Travel Artist

The Iconic Crystal Palace Water Tower, one of two, was not actually destroyed in the Crystal Palace fire in 1936, it was blown up some 5 years later in 1941 specifically for its structure to be used in the war efforts. Here it is meeting its fate. It is also thought at the time the unique tall structure was potentially too much of a landmark for German bombers.
