The Brown Pelican is one of the most common pelican species and one of only two that dives for their food. Their webbed feet are a perfect adaptation that allows them to easily glide through the water. Pelicans have a preen gland that secretes an oily substance. This oil is spread on their feathers as a type of waterproofing to help keep them dry. While in rehabilitation, our pelican patients are routinely offered swim time.
