In 1956, physicist John Bardeen won the Nobel Prize in Physics for co-inventing the transistor. At the ceremony in Stockholm, he brought only one of his three children. The King of Sweden jokingly asked why he hadn’t brought them all, and Bardeen promised, “I’ll bring them next time.” Sixteen years later, in 1972, after winning his second Nobel Prize for the theory of superconductivity, Bardeen honored that promise and brought all three children.
