HPD plans to destroy hundreds of thousands of pounds of unneeded drugs and other evidence that have caused rat infestations and property room overflow

The Houston Police Department, the Mayor's office, and the District Attorney's Office are teaming up for a holistic approach to battle the weed-eating rodents.

A rat infestation in a property room holding 1.2 million pieces of evidence is sparking concerns. "Anytime evidence is compromised, then cases could be compromised," a defense attorney said.

"Just one example, we've got 400,000 pounds of marijuana in storage that the rats are the only ones enjoying," Mayor John Whitmire said.
