NASA's Curiosity rover made a significant discovery of sulfur crystals, which was the first in its Mars exploration.

NASA scientists say pure sulfur has been found on Mars for the first time after the Curiosity rover inadvertently uncovered a cluster of yellow crystals when it drove over a rock.

The crystals are pure sulfur, a first-time find on Mars. While researchers are intrigued, it is not fully known why it formed in this region.

The yellow sulfur crystals in a pure form have never been seen before on Mars. Earlier findings have been sulfur-based minerals, or a mixture of sulfur and other materials, according to NASA.

The rover crushed a section of rock with its wheels and discovered a rare sample of pure yellow sulfur crystals.

This region was found to have lots of sulfates—a salt containing sulfur—in the soil. However, what the rover found inside the rock wasn't sulfate but crystals of pure sulfur.
