President Donald Trump's administration faces deadlines on Monday to tell two federal judges whether it will comply with court orders that it continue to fund the nation's biggest food aid program using contingency funds during the government shutdown.
Gov. Hochul declared a state of emergency to free up an additional $65M to help food pantries feed 3M New Yorkers being hit by SNAP cutoff on Nov. 1.
The SNAP program is losing federal funding on Saturday. Many older people won’t be able to easily line up at food pantries or go out and get second jobs.
County social service agencies have been directing families to lists of food banks in their communities in case they run out of food. The Food Bank of Central New York, which serves 11 counties, has ordered 20% more food this month to help pantries stock up.
Hochul said she’s trying to find a way to allow students to take home food that’s left over at the end of the school day as well.
"Now we'll have to prioritize which bills we can pay and which can wait," said one mother of two about a looming freeze in food aid.
Syracuse, N.Y. — In Central New York, 100,000 people depend on food stamps to help make ends meet. The federal food stamp program, referred to as SNAP, stopped funding the program on Saturday Nov. 1.
