Witnesses told police the teen was swimming with his family when he was pulled from shore by a strong ocean current.

A 17-year-old boy drowned during high surf conditions in New Hampshire after lifeguards had left the beach for the day, according to local officials.

Vermont State Police said the man killed, James Crary, 36, was a resident of Newport, New Hampshire. State police are continuing to investigate the shooting.

Troopers said the New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol was notified of the incident just before 7 p.m. on Sunday.
