As California heads into peak wildfire season, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a new effort to recruit firefighters and emergency personnel for Cal Fire, one of the world’s largest firefighting departments.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY – Cal Fire crews on Thursday were continuing to battle brush fires that broke out Wednesday near the San Luis Reservoir and in southeastern San Benito County.

Airline Fire initially started 7:01 p.m. June 12 in San Benito County. It has burned 46 acres after being active for five hours. By Friday midnight, the fire crew managed to contain 95% of the fire. However, investigations into the cause are ongoing.

Firefighters made progress battling a wind-driven brush fire burning in steep, rugged terrain south of Apple Valley overnight. The Ranch fire, which has burned through 4,205 acres of vegetation, is now 10% contained, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection announced Wednesday morning.
