The 2024 edition of the Kennedy Center Honors celebrated an eclectic assortment of entertainers Sunday night: filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, singer Bonnie Raitt, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and surviving members of the Grateful Dead.

This year’s recipients of the lifetime achievement award for artistic accomplishment are director Francis Ford Coppola, rock band the Grateful Dead, jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt. In addition, the venerable Harlem theater The Apollo, which has launched generations of Black artists, is being recognized.

Queen Latifah, 54, who received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2023, took her first turn as Honors host, kicking off the night by declaring, “Let’s party!" and then launching right
