A grieving Italian scientist who lost both his wife and a daughter in the Maldives diving tragedy insisted Friday that something wildly unexpected must have happened because his wife was too experienced a diver to have taken risks.

This span of months is also the best time to spot manta rays and whale sharks in the eastern side of the atolls, with June being a prime time to visit the hot spot at Hanifaru Bay. For sunbathers, the Maldives is normally glorious between December and April.
