The United Nation's Palestinian refugee agency said on Sunday it had been ordered by Israel to vacate premises and cease all of its operations in occupied East Jerusalem by Thursday.
Israel, backed by Washington, will cease contact with the UN's Palestinian humanitarian relief agency UNRWA and any body acting on its behalf, its UN envoy said Tuesday, drawing condemnation from aid groups.
On Tuesday this week, the US expressed its support for Israel’s sovereign decision to close the UNRWA offices in eastern Jerusalem. Dorothy Shea, US deputy representative to the UN, told the Security Council: “UNRWA is exaggerating the effects of the laws and suggesting that they will force the entire humanitarian response to a halt is irresponsible and dangerous.
The ban effectively cuts off the UN aid agency from delivering critical aid to Gaza, putting millions of Palestinians at risk after 15 months of war have devastated the region.
