A Virginia hospital has been indicted on federal charges arising out of what prosecutors say was a "horrifying scheme" to profit from unnecessary hysterectomies and other surgeries performed by a doctor that left many patients sterile.

Chesapeake Regional Healthcare billed about $18.5 million in questionable procedures performed by Javaid Perwaiz, who was convicted in 2020, prosecutors say.

From 2010 to 2019, the hospital allegedly received about $18.5 million in reimbursements from healthcare benefit programs for surgical and obstetric procedures that Dr. Perwaiz performed at the hospital.
