Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently explained why Season 2 features a character named Thanos, after the Marvel villain. Speaking to Netflix, Hwang said the name was chosen to give the character global appeal.

Squid Game Season 2 had some big shoes to fill when it arrived, given just how wildly successful the Emmy-winning first season was. And although the sophomore run on Netflix was a fun one, the format change was frustrating. It seemed like we couldn't escape from the series, and then Season 2 finally came out in 2024 after a three-year wait. But thankfully, we're not going to be waiting long for Squid Game Season 3 – the final season.
