The islands of Siargao and Bucas Grande are now under a state of calamity because of the prolonged power outage.

A power outage on Siargao Island that began on Dec. 1 left thousands of residents without electricity, prompting calls to declare a calamity state. A special session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial council) to declare the state of calamity will be held on Monday.

The Department of Trade and Industry in Surigao del Norte (DTI-SDN) has implemented a 60-day price freeze on basic goods in Siargao Island, following the declaration of a state of calamity due to a prolonged power outage.

The power outage experienced in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte for at least a week now had led to problems in water supply for several residents.
