As the Mount Underwood wildfire rages south of Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, residents and other communities bathed in smoke hope the promise of rain will help quench the flames.

The Mount Underwood blaze was “mainly a smouldering ground fire” on Friday thanks to the rain that fell overnight.

Up to 40 mm of rain is forecast to fall on the blaze near Port Alberni, which grew to more than 3,400 hectares on Thursday.

Recent rainfall has helped slow the growth of the Mount Underwood wildfire near Port Alberni, though the fire has moved closer to the community since it first started.
