Director Gareth Edwards explained that a character who dies in the film didn't always die, and in fact, both fates were filmed.

Rebirth, the seventh Jurassic movie (in theaters now), is littered with Easter eggs and visual callbacks to past entries — some more overt than others. There are also references to past works of Steven Spielberg; Edwards points out a Back to the Future magazine is sitting in the gas station where the Delgados are hunted by Mutadons.

At the time of writing this, Universal Pictures is still waiting to see how Jurassic World Rebirth opens over the holiday weekend. Any plans for a direct sequel, a new standalone installment, and any kind of timeline for developing and releasing said project largely depend on how this one performs.
