The Federal Aviation Administration said it plans to boost the number of flights at Newark Liberty International Airport next week after a runway reopened on Monday nearly two weeks ahead of schedule.

A construction project on one of Newark Liberty International Airport’s three main runways wrapped up nearly two weeks early, so the Federal Aviation Administration expects to be able to ease flight limits next week despite the ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the Newark airport could return to capacity for 34 hourly arrivals and departures as soon as next week.
