The 45-day-long Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest and most spiritually significant events in the world, came to a spectacular close on Wednesday as millions of devotees gathered at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj for the final 'Amrit Snan' (holy dip) on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri.

Thousands of pilgrims gathered in the north Indian holy city of Prayagraj for the last Amrit Snan (holy bath) in the Trveni Sangam (the meeting point of Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati) during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela or the Great Pitcher Festival which will end on Wednesday.

According to government data, by 2 am today, over 11.66 lakh devotees immersed themselves in the Sangam. This number surged to 25.64 lakh within the next two hours and nearly doubled by 6 am, with 41.

Indian Railways have made arrangements to run additional trains after the Maha Shivaratri Snan, and extra rakes have been stationed near Prayagraj for use as needed.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which occurs once every twelve years, concludes today with a multitude of devotees, including monks and pilgrims from various backgrounds,

Till date, nearly 64 crore devotees have taken a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers, since the Maha Kumbh commenced on January 13.
