OMAHA — Union Pacific’s “Living Legend” No. 844 steam locomotive will be in Kearney late Monday morning to make a stop on its trip to Omaha in June.
The winning route will be announced Jan. 18. UP maintains the No. 3985 "Challenger" and the No. 844 steam locomotives. The Challenger is the world's largest operating steam locomotive.
It will then proceed north to Coffeyville, Kansas, where it will spend the night before heading north. No. 844 was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad and was delivered in 1944.
Big Boy No. 4014 calls Cheyenne home, along with Union Pacific’s Steam Shop and the other historic locomotive, UP No. 844. Union Pacific also has nearly 800 employees in Wyoming.
