A former Iowa police officer accused of repeated use of excessive force is suing the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy for suspending his certification.
Gialenes said in a lawsuit filed Monday that former APD Officer Joseph Spees caused her permanent brain damage. Spees was fired by the department last month after an investigation found he used excessive force and misled investigators about the severity of Gialenes’ arrest.
According to court documents, the lawsuit was started by an incident in March 2024, when Fugate, Sizemore’s boyfriend, was arrested by HPD.
