Israel's air force has struck areas in southern and eastern Lebanon, including Sidon, the country's third-largest city.
The Lebanese army had given itself until the end of 2025 to complete the first phase of its plan to clear the south and disarm non-state groups, including Hezbollah. The Iran-backed group has been resisting attempts to disarm it, as Israel continues its bombardment of the south and east of the country where Hezbollah has traditionally held sway.

Clearing the southern region of “non-state weaponry” was a requirement of the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel that took effect in November 2024. Since then, Israel has carried out strikes in response to what it says are insufficient efforts to contain and disarm Iran-backed Hezbollah and other terror groups.
