The Spalding Museum caboose's journey to the community began simply enough with a letter from Francis J. (Smitty) Schmidt, then serving as Spalding's mayor, in June 1987 to the Union Pacific Railroad.

The 1967 Union Pacific caboose sat in Springfield’s Buffalo Park for 25 years. In April, Springfield accepted an $18 bid from the museum to buy the caboose.
