Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet began ceasefire talks in Malaysia around 3:15pm local time (0715 GMT).

The Thailand-Cambodia border, where fighting has raged since last week, was calm following a ceasefire deal and military commanders from both sides are set to meet for talks later in the day, acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said.

Thailand’s acting PM downplayed the clashes, noting he spoke with Cambodia’s defence minister before military commanders' talks.

The ceasefire agreement brokered in Putrajaya was a win for Malaysia premier Anwar Ibrahim and ASEAN, experts say. With clashes reportedly erupting early Tuesday morning, however, observation teams are urgently needed on the ground.
