Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and legislative leaders announced there will be a one-day special session on Monday to pass the remaining parts of the next two-year budget, ending weeks of limbo in the most closely divided Legislature in state history.

Beyond the regular session May 19 deadline, leaders have missed several self-imposed deadlines for finishing their work: May 26, May 29 and June 4. Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, DFL-St. Paul, said Wednesday that lawmakers are “making progress — it is as slow as molasses, but molasses is good.”

That’s the hope. Normal rules that require a bill be given three separate readings on three different days will be suspended, as well as “any other rules that would prevent passage of the above bills before 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2025,” the agreement signed by the governor and all four caucus leaders said.
