No. 10 Michigan State basketball was shocked by Minnesota on the road in what figured to be a big win, but a flat effort cost them.

Minnesota responded to the technical with an instant 5-0 run to take a 50-40 lead. Michigan State was battling back, but an and-one by the Gophers to put them up 11 lit up the Williams Arena with eight minutes left. Michigan State was able to respond with back-to-back alley-oops from Fears to Coen Carr.

MINNEAPOLIS – Following a rivalry defeat at home, that was far from the response Michigan State was looking for. The No. 10 Spartans (19-4, 9-3 Big Ten) fell behind by double digits in the first half before a late rally came up short in a 76-73 loss at Minnesota on Wednesday.

The Spartans have won the last three against the Golden Gophers and lead the all-time series 79-62. Fears averages 14.9 points and 8.8 assists for Michigan State, with Kohler posting 13.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Tyson paces Minnesota with an average of 19.9 points, while Crocker-Johnson puts up 13.4 points and 6.9 boards per game.

MINNEAPOLIS – Michigan State’s second straight loss may also include a major hit to the lineup. Sophomore guard Divine Ugochukwu suffered a left foot injury in the first half of Wednesday’s 76-73 loss at Minnesota and it’s unclear how long he’ll be out.
