Jamal Roberts, a 27-year-old PE teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, won the popular vote to become the "American Idol" Season 23 champion during the May 18 finale. According to USA TODAY, Roberts is the first Black man to earn the title since Carrie Underwood's predecessor, Season 2's Ruben Studdard, in 2003.
