The head of the federal government agency that oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac wants the mortgage giants to consider accepting a homebuyer's cryptocurrency holdings in their criteria for buying mortgages from banks.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency's director, Bill Pulte, has asked Fannie Mae (OTCQB:FNMA) and Freddie Mac (OTCQB:FMCC) to prepare for cryptocurrency's inclusion as an asset in mortgage-related risk assessment.

The regulator overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on Wednesday ordered the housing giants to consider cryptocurrency as an asset for single-family mortgage loan risk assessments, a move that could potentially open the door to borrowers using crypto investments to qualify for home loans.
