On October 26, 2025, after some eighteen months of siege, El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, fell to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces
RSF paramilitary fighters are carrying out mass ethnic killings in the recently captured city of El Fashir, according to videos, aerial images and interviews.
More than two years after the start of Sudan's civil war, the nation's military has ceded nearly all of Darfur to a paramilitary group in an effort to prevent more death and destruction there.
The ICRC wishes to recall the main rules applicable to the present situation in Al Fasher. Specifically, civilians shall in all circumstances be treated humanely, without any adverse distinction. Their life, property, health, physical and mental well-being must be protected.
Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said Sunday it had seized full control of El-Fasher, the last major city in the expansive Darfur region not in its hands, in a potential turning point in the country's unrelenting civil war.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are consolidating power in Darfur's al-Fashir, amid fears of partition and civilian retaliation. With advanced weaponry, the RSF threatens further conflict in Sudan. Allegations of foreign interference and humanitarian concerns add complexity to the ongoing civil war.
