The ruling caps months of political turmoil that have overshadowed efforts to deal with the new administration of U.S. President Donald Trump at a time of slowing growth.

Tension is mounting in Seoul as the constitutional court is set to decide whether Yoon Suk Yeol will be removed.

South Korea's president has been removed from office after the Constitutional Court voted unanimously to uphold his impeachment. Yoon Suk Yeol was suspended from duty in December after being impeached by parliament, following his failed attempt to impose martial law.

With his ouster, a presidential election is required to take place within 60 days, according to the South Korea's constitution.
